Why does my balance look wrong?

Check why a balance or total in Finsplore does not match your bank, and how to bring it up to date.

A balance in Finsplore can differ from what your bank shows. Most of the time the reason is one of the four below. Check them in order.

1. The account has not been updated recently

Finsplore does not update your accounts by itself. Balances and transactions come from the statements you import, so an account is only as current as its latest statement.

  1. Open Accounts and click the account.
  2. Look at Latest transaction under Details. If the date is old, your bank has probably recorded more since.
  3. Click Import statements, or Import into existing on Accounts, and add a newer statement.

Finsplore skips transactions it already has, so overlapping dates are fine. See Import a bank statement.

2. An account is missing

Every total adds up only the accounts you have added. If you hold a card, savings account or loan that is not in Finsplore, your totals will not match what you expect. Check Accounts for each account you hold, and add any that are missing.

3. You are comparing two different figures

The total on Accounts and your Net worth are not meant to match.

  • Accounts covers the accounts you have added from statements.
  • Net worth also counts assets and liabilities you add by hand, such as a car or a property, and it subtracts what you owe.

See How your net worth is calculated.

4. A hand-entered value is out of date

Anything you add by hand, such as a car or a property, keeps the value you gave it until you change it. If your net worth looks off, check those values.

Still not adding up

If the account is up to date and your totals still differ, your income may not be fully recorded. Reconcile your income to your tax return shows how much of your net income your transactions account for, and which transactions still need a category.

If you think a figure is a mistake in Finsplore, report a problem.
