Import a bank statement
Add an account to Finsplore by importing a statement file from your bank, or add a newer statement to an account you already have.
Importing a statement is how you bring an account and its transactions into Finsplore. Finsplore reads the account details from the file, sorts every transaction into a category, and shows you where the money went, so you can see your spending without typing anything in.
Before you start
Download a statement from your bank's internet banking. Most banks only offer the export on a computer, not in their app. Finsplore reads these file types: CSV, OFX, QFX (Quicken's OFX format), QIF, MT940, camt.053 and PDF.
A CSV file covering the last 3 months is a good place to start. If your bank has no export, a PDF statement works too.
Add a new account from a statement
- Open Accounts and click Add account.
- Under Where should this statement go?, choose A new account and click Continue.
- Under Which bank is this from?, search for your bank and select it, then click Continue. If your bank is not in the list, click My bank isn't listed.
- Drop your statement into the box, or click browse your files to choose it. If you are not sure where to find the file, open How to get a statement from your bank for steps.
- If the PDF is protected with a password, enter it in PDF password and click Unlock.
- When Finsplore has read the file, click Continue.
- If you imported a CSV, Finsplore may ask you to Check how we read the columns, such as Date, Description, Amount and Balance. Change any that look wrong. Finsplore skips this step when your bank's file already labels its columns.
- Under Confirm the account, check the account name, Currency, Account type and Last 4 digits. Finsplore fills these in from your statement. Change anything that looks wrong, then click Continue.
- Review the summary. It shows the number of transactions, the dates the statement covers, and Where it went by category. To check each transaction, click Review all rows.
- Click the Import button. It shows how many transactions will be imported.
- Finsplore adds your transactions and sorts them into categories. When it says Your transactions are in, click Continue.
You then see how many transactions were Imported, how many you Already had and how many it Couldn't read, along with your biggest spending category.
Click View transactions to see them, or Continue to go to your accounts.
Add a newer statement to an account you already have
Finsplore does not update your accounts by itself, so import a new statement whenever you want an account to catch up.
- Open Accounts and click Import into existing.
- Choose the account the statement belongs to and click Continue.
- Choose your bank, drop in the new statement and follow the same steps as above. You do not need to confirm the account details again.
Finsplore checks the file against the transactions you have already imported and skips any repeats, so overlapping dates are fine.
