Finsplore

Change a transaction's category

Move a transaction to the right category, and choose whether Finsplore does the same for similar transactions.

Finsplore sorts every transaction into a category, such as Groceries or Transportation, based on details like the merchant name. Most land in the right place, but if one does not, you can move it. Your spending, budgets and charts then use the right category.

You can also teach Finsplore, so similar transactions go to the same category from now on and you do not have to fix them again.

Change the category

  1. Open Transactions and click the transaction.
  2. Next to Category, click Edit.
  3. Under Recategorise, pick the category the transaction belongs to.
  4. If the category has subcategories, pick one, or click Just the category. You can also click Add your own to create a subcategory.
  5. Choose which transactions the change applies to:
    • Only this: this transaction alone.
    • This + all past similar: this one and similar transactions you have already imported.
    • This + all future similar: this one and similar transactions you import later.
    • This + past + future: all of the above.
  6. Click Apply.

If you chose an option that includes past transactions, Finsplore shows how many it will change. Click Review to check them before they are updated.

Changing past transactions also changes your past spending figures for that category. That is usually what you want, but check before you apply it.

Finsplore remembers your choice and offers it first next time.

Categories suggested by connected apps

Once Finsplore Connect is available (it's coming soon), a connected app will be able to suggest a category for a transaction. It shows Suggested by and the app's name. A suggestion never overrides a category you set yourself, or your rules. In the web app, click Accept on the row or in the open transaction. In the mobile app, open the transaction and tap Accept suggestion. Or change the category yourself. Either way the category becomes yours. See Review categories suggested by connected apps.

Which plans include custom categories

Creating your own categories, renaming them and adding subcategories (Add your own) is part of Early access, Plus and Pro. On the Free plan these controls show a lock. Selecting one opens Custom categories are part of Plus and Pro, with a See plans button.

Custom categories you already have keep working on every plan. You can still move transactions into them, merge them and delete them.

If you are a member of a shared workspace and your role cannot change categories, you see Only the workspace owner or an admin can change categories. Ask the owner or an admin to make the change.
