Project your money with Plan

See how your savings could grow until you retire and how long they could last after, using your own figures.

Plan projects your own numbers forward: through your working years, then into retirement, to the end of your plan. It shows how much you could have when you retire and how long that money could last. Change a number, such as your retirement age or how much you spend, and the projection updates straight away, so you can see what each choice does.

Plan uses only your own figures. It does not fill gaps with guesses, so it asks for anything it is missing before it projects.

Start with the big numbers

  1. Open Plan. It opens on the Guided tab.
  2. Under How you invest, choose Conservative, Balanced or Growth. This sets the yearly return Plan assumes. You can also type your own Investment return (a year).
  3. Enter or check:
    • Age now
    • Retire at: the age you plan to retire.
    • Income a year (before tax)
    • Spending a year: Finsplore fills this in from your transactions where it can.

If Plan shows We need a few numbers before we can project, it lists what is missing. Enter it in the fields, or click Add your birth date to add it to your planning assumptions.

Change every assumption

Open the Advanced tab to see and change everything Plan uses, including:

  • Birth date, which sets your exact super preservation age.
  • Plan to age: how long the plan needs to last. It starts at 92.
  • Super balance and Investments outside super. Finsplore fills these in from your records unless you change them.
  • Extra saving a year.
  • My employer pays super on my income: turn this off if you are self-employed or not paid super.
  • Income growth, Inflation, Withdrawal rate and Market volatility.
  • One-off events (today's dollars): click Add for a lump sum in or out at a certain age, such as a house deposit or an inheritance.

Under each field, Plan tells you where the figure came from, such as You entered this.

Read your projection

  • The summary tells you how much you are projected to have by your retirement age, and what that is worth in today's money.
  • The outcome line tells you the age your money is projected to last to.
  • Range of possible outcomes runs many possible market paths and shows the chance your money lasts to the end of your plan.
  • Projected balance over time charts your balance year by year. The solid line is in the dollars of each year. The dashed line is the same money adjusted for inflation.
  • What this plan starts from shows the money the plan counts. Your home and other things you would have to sell are left out.
  • Assumptions used lists every assumption, and whether it is yours, a default, or set by law.

Super can usually only be drawn from your preservation age, so Plan funds the years before that from money outside super.

Compare what-ifs

On the Advanced tab, click Open scenarios under Compare scenarios to try out a what-if, such as a market crash, a change in income, a house or a family, and come back to it later.

Plan shows the effect of your assumptions. It does not predict what markets will do or tell you what to invest in, and it is not financial advice. Read About this projection for what it leaves out, and consider speaking to a licensed financial adviser before making financial decisions.
